It is with deep sadness and profound loss that we announce the passing of Marina Vasconcelos, a bright and compassionate young woman who tragically lost her life on April 29, 2025, in a devastating accident in Newark, Delaware. Marina, 24, was a graduate student at the University of Delaware, pursuing a doctorate in biochemistry and making significant strides in her field.
Born and raised in North East, Maryland, Marina was known for her remarkable intellect, passion for science, and commitment to making a difference in the world. She was a third-year Ph.D. candidate in Dr. Catherine Grimes’ lab, where her research focused on understanding the role of O-GlcNAcylation in innate immunity, specifically in relation to the NOD2 gene. Her work, particularly in the area of carbohydrate research and its connection to diseases like Crohn’s disease, earned her the admiration of colleagues and mentors alike. Marina was instrumental in securing funding from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation for her research, which underscored her dedication to advancing medical knowledge and helping others.
Before her time at the University of Delaware, Marina graduated with honors from York College of Pennsylvania in 2022, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, with minors in Biology and Spanish. Her academic achievements were matched only by her drive to bridge the gap between science and healthcare, a passion she hoped to pursue as a medical science liaison, helping to connect pharmaceutical companies and physicians in the pursuit of better treatments for patients.
Marina was not only a brilliant scientist but also a loving and devoted person. She had a special bond with her beloved dog, Princess, whom she found through a fellow student in her program, symbolizing the kindness and warmth that characterized her personality. Her friends and family will remember her for her generosity, her infectious enthusiasm, and her ability to inspire those around her to strive for excellence.
The accident that claimed her life also injured several others, and while Marina’s presence will be profoundly missed, her legacy will continue to live on through the impact she made in both her academic community and the lives of everyone who knew her.
Marina is survived by her loving family and friends, who will cherish her memory forever. She leaves behind a lasting legacy in the field of biochemistry, as well as a world of individuals who were touched by her kindness, intellect, and dedication.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, an organization that Marina supported through her groundbreaking research.
